Location: Chausath Yogini Temple is considered to be the oldest temple in Khajuraho and it is located in the south-western part of Siva-Sagar Tank, in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.
Description: Believed to have been constructed in the ninth century, Chausath Yogini Temple is a part of the western group of temples and it is devoted to 64 yoginis or aspects of Goddess Shakti. It is constructed on a large raised platform using coarse granite. Platform is set in a courtyard and is enclosed by a number of small temples, which are dedicated to the yoginis. The most prominent feature of this temple is its unusual design and plan. This is because, unlike other yogini temples present in India, this temple is quadrangular in shape, rather than circular.
This temple can be easily reached from various areas of Madhya Pradesh and other parts of the country, through road, rail and air. Rail route to Khajuraho is also well established and the nearest rail heads from Khajuraho are Haralpur and Mahoba. Flights from Delhi airport to Khajuraho airport are also frequently available, so people can go to this place by air also.
