Bhairav is a ferocious embodiment of Lord Shiva, and the city of Ujjain has copious memorials devoted to this vicious manifestation. This temple is actually related to the Tantra cult, a sacrilegious and clandestine religious section which practices black magic. In the temple premises you can see a number of holy men with their bodies smeared in ash and long messy hair.
The lingam of Lord Shiva is located under the banyan tree inside the temple, and just opposite to it is located the statue of Nandi Bull. In this temple you can see the sculptures of various gods and goddesses as well. The temple decoration and mood is at its peak at the time of Mahashivratri, when the temple is packed with ardent devotees.
