Situated in Janbazar area of Triplicane, Wallajah Mosque, also known as the Big Mosque, is one of the most beautiful mosques in the city. Constructed in the memory of Nawab Wallajah by his family in 1795, this is regarded as an important monument. Glimpse of the Indian, Iranian and Islamic architecture can be witnessed in this big mosque.
No wood or steel has been used and the mosque is completely built with the help of grey granite. At the front two minarets are present and medieval style of architecture is followed for the construction. This place is regarded as an important site of worship by Muslim devotees.
Meelad committee of the mosque celebrates Prophet’s birthday in the grounds of this mosque. Various cultural and religious activities and functions are also held at this place. On special events, like Eid-ul-Fitr and Bakra Eid, large number of devotees visits the big mosque, which is beautifully decorated at that time.
