St Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Tamil Nadu

St Thomas Orthodox Cathedral

The famous St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral was built by Portuguese in the year 1523. Situated near Chennai International Airport, this cathedral is located on the mount where a well known missionary, St. Thomas, lost his life and hence the hillock was named after him.

St. Thomas Cathedral fell to ruins during the period between 14th and 15th century. Portuguese built a new church and moved the saint’s remains to a new tomb. But in the year 1893, the church was again demolished and was built again in 1896. It was only in 1956 that this cathedral was given the status of basilica in order to mark a tribute to the martyred saint.

On every Sunday morning, the holy Qurbana is offered to the lord in Malayalam. Different activities are regularly held in this church to engage more people in the work of charity. This is a famous religious place as well as a prominent tourist destination.
