An open air museum and a cultural centre, Dakshinachitra is located at a distance of 20 km on the east coast road. Opened to public in 1996, it is a heritage village that was built in order to preserve the traditional ways of south Indian life. This village consists of some traditional homes commonly seen in the southern India. Built over 10 acres, this hamlet offers a variety of activities for the tourists.
The main motive of Dakshinachitra, which is a project of Madras Craft Foundation, is to promote the diverse and rich culture of India with special emphasis on the culture of South India.
Visitors can enjoy playing various games, such as spin tops or different board games. Various exhibitions are held here that give an insight of the rich traditions and culture. Travelers can even savor the delicious food which is offered here. Reaching this site is easy as tourists can take a bus from the city.
