Marundeeswarar Temple

Marundeeswarar Temple situated in Tiruvanmiyur is known for the deity of Lord Shiva in the shape of Marundeeswar or Aushadeeswarar. Holy Marundeeswar is also known as the god of medicines. It is mentioned in the mythology that a great saint Agastya was the one who named deity "Aushadeeswarar". It is said that the sun and the moon perform prayers in this temple every evening. It is not like other Shiva temples which has navgrahs because it has the sun and moon performing the prayers every day. The foremost "lingam" is portrayed as Swayambu. He was also called Palvannanathan because the holy cow kamdhenu used to bathe him with milk continuously.

During the time of festivals a parade is conducted. A high chariot is placed 6 or 7 feet above the crowd, along with deity and priests. Innumerable people visit this temple to take the blessings of Lord Shiva. The frequent visitors believe that anyone who sincerely visits the temple and has the mix of sacred ash, milk and water can cure any disease or ailment. A huge crowd can be seen in this temple nowadays.
