Masjid Zeenath Baksh, Karnataka

Masjid Zeenath Baksh

The other name for Masjid Zeenath Baksh is Jumma Masjid. This mosque in Mangalore was built by Muslim Arab traders of Bunder back in the 7th century. The Mosque was inaugurated on the 22nd of the month of Jumadil Avval, which was a Friday and was 22 in Hijra. Tipu Sultan, also known as the “Tiger of Mysore”, started the work of renovation of the Masjid himself.  He strictly supervised the whole restoration process and even got the wood work done towards the end of the 18th century and rechristened the Masjid as “Zeenath Baksh”  inspired by his daughter’s name.  All the visitors are left spell bound by the huge veranda, a majestic eye attracting water tank and an open point.
