Built by King Baji Rao, in the year 1730, this great palace of Pune belonged to the great Peshwa dynasty which reigned from here. In the year 1827, this place was destroyed by a fire, which however was not able to bring down the mighty walls. Another surviving icon, a grand door which is about 21 feet high, survived the blaze and is now known by the name of Delhi Darwaza.
This palace is the finest example of the cultural and architectural knowledge present during the Maratha reign. However, the effect of the mixing of both Maratha and Mughal style of architecture is seen in this palace.
