Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Kerala

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Spread over an impressive expanse of 14 acres, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary attracts both, rare migratory birds as well as enthusiastic bird watchers. It is very common to see rare bird species, like Golden-Backed Woodpeckers, Night Herons, Kingfishers, Paradise fly catchers, egrets and the very special migratory Siberian cranes from Siberia.

The government of India established the sanctuary in an effort to preserve the natural habitat of native plants, like mandrakes and coconut trees and the various bird species co-habiting the area. Local people happily canoe tourists through the entire sanctuary.
