Located around 14 km from Kottayam in Kumarakom, the Bay Island Driftwood museum showcases a collection of quality driftwood articles, making it the only museum of its kind in India. It has a special mention in the Limca Book of World records for housing articles of high artistic value, like root and tree trunk sculptures in unique forms and designs, created through modern art techniques.
Founded by Raji Punnoose, a dynamic teacher in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this museum showcases sculptures transformed from driftwood pieces, comprising of twisted tree trunks, stumps and roots, which she had collected as the castoffs from the seashore during her professional tenure. Many of the beautiful, ingenious sculptures resemble birds, animals, reptiles, amphibians and fishes, inspiring feelings of wonder in many tourists, who visit this place.
