Location: One of the most incredibly isolated monasteries in India, Spituk Monastery, is just 8 km away from Leh on the shores of Indus River.

Description: Just like other monasteries in Leh, Spituk Monastery is also located far away from the hustle-bustle of urban cities. On reaching this holy place, you will feel like you have come closer to God and his nature. Dating back to 11th century, the monastery was honored by the name of Spituk by a famous translator, Richen Zangpo. It was founded by Od-de, who was the elder brother of Lha Changchub Od. Currently, the monastery serves as an abode for 100 monks. This Buddhist monastery is the finest example of peace and solitude. So while you are in Ladakh, do visit this mesmerizing place to fulfill your journey. One must see the powerful performance of the Lhamas on special occasions in this temple. Along with this, the monastery is very popular for its assortment of ancient masks, icons, antique arms and several Thangkas.

Activities: Spituk Gustor, an annual festival is celebrated with great fervor in the monastery and many tourists visit Leh especially to take part in this festival. Mahakal Temple is the nearby shrine here, offering a real treat for the eyes.
