Location: Nyoma Monastery lies in northern India and it is situated in Nyoma town in Leh district of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. Nyoma monastery is located on hilltop near the Nyoma town.
Description: Nyoma, also known as Nyoma Rap, is one of the most attractive areas in Leh district. The hill on which this monastery is located lies on the banks of Indus River. Mahe and Rupshu are the nearest towns to Nyoma monastery. Nyoma monastery belongs to the Drokpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is surrounded by several clusters of fifteen stupa and three shrines. Stupa refers to the mound like structure, typically containing the ashes of Buddhist monks. Nyoma monastery also represents the art and architecture style that existed during medieval period. One of the most significant stupa is in the north side of the monastery with significant murals inside it. The Nyoma monastery is now under the guidance of the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa. This monastery provides spiritual education to the local children.
Activities: One can enjoy a great scenic view from the top of the Nyoma monastery and this is the best place for photography. Tourists can also witness medieval architectural art, demonstrated by the ancient shrines and stupas.
