Location: Mulbekh is a town that is 25 km ahead of Bodh Kharboo. Mulbekh Chamba lies on the Kargil-Leh road. It is located at a distance of about 45km in the east of Kargil, Ladakh.
Description: Maitreya Buddha is also known as Mulbekh Chamba and that is why the Mulbekh monastery is known by the name Mulbekh Chamba. Mulbekh Chamba is a kilometer away from Mulbekh town, where a famous statue of Maitreya Buddha is located. This ancient statue is 9 m in height and is made from limestone. This enormous figure is carved into the rock by Ladakhi missionaries to propagate Buddhism. It is believed that the rock sculpture belongs to the Kushan period. On the same rock, there is an edict issued by King Lde to discontinue sacrificing goats. It is said that the villagers used to tear out the hearts of living goats in the front of an altar and therefore the King Lde issued this edict to abolish the living sacrifices.
Activities: One can enjoy the view of the beautiful Maitreya Buddha structure overlooking the old trade route and modern highway. The Mulbekh monastery comprises of the ancient inscriptions and frescos which represents the ancient Buddhist art and edicts inscribed in Kharoshti script.
