Thiksey Monastery, Leh

Location: The sacred land of Leh town has another wonderful Buddhist shrine, the Thiksey Monastery. Located just about 19 km in the east of the main city, you can reach this place in 30 to 40 minutes from Leh town.

Description: A remnant of historic Ladakhi style of architecture, Thiksey Monastery is an impressive structure built on a hilltop. This Tibetan Buddhist monastery belongs to the Yellow hat section of Buddhism. Notable for its fine art, the monastery is said to be a replica of Potala Palace in Tibet and gives an amazing view of nearby areas. Elevated at a height of 3600 m above sea level, the twelve storey structure holds a treasure of stupas, statues, thankgas, wall paintings and swords. If you are a history lover or an archaeological buff, then you must visit this place which stores something special for all spectators. There are very few monasteries in India like the Thiksey Monastery, which has a nunnery in its complex.

Activities: Thiksey Festival is celebrated every year in this monastery and a huge number of devotees take part on this auspicious occasion with great pomp and show. Leh trip will not be complete until you visit the attractions, like Shey Gompa and Metho Gompa, located very near to this holy place.
