Sankar Gompa, Leh

Location: Sankar Gompa, one of the famous monasteries, is located at a distance of about 3 Kilometers from the main city of Leh, Ladakh.

Description: Sankar Gompa, well known for its traditional architectural design, incorporates an idol of Avalokitesvara, having 1000 arms and 11 heads. It is a home to 20 monks. The steps present in the monastery lead to an assembly hall or “Dukhang”. A painting of the guardian of four directions is displayed at the entrance of the assembly hall. Various paintings of Buddha, imposing divine powers, can be seen on the walls of the assembly hall. The place is beautifully painted with mandalas, adding to the beauty of the Gompa. Earlier serving as a home of Abbot of Spituk, some guest rooms and a library can be seen on the first floor of the Gompa.  Various other images, including Sakyamuni and Amchi, exist in this monastery. Sankar Gompa houses 108 volumes of the teachings of Buddha, along with three images of Past Buddha, Present Buddha and Future Buddha. It also incorporates a temple dedicated to Lord Dukar.

Activities: Showcasing the architecture of ancient times, the monastery allows the tourists to explore its magnificent and ancient beauty. The temple present inside the monastery can be visited to seek blessings of God. Situated amidst vast mountain ranges, adventure seekers can participate in motor biking. Visitors can also enjoy local cuisines and beverages.
