Matho Monastery, Leh

Location: This monastery is situated in Leh district of Ladakh region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated at a distance of around 26 kilometers from the city of Leh on the charming Indus Valley River.   

Description: Matho Monastery has a history that dates back to five hundred years. It is the only monastery that comes under the influence of Saskya monastic establishment in Leh. This monastery was constructed by Lama Dugpa Dorje, a well known Lama in Buddhist Monarchy. This monastery serves as a house for a beautiful collection of thangkas of ancient times, particularly some of them which are in the form of mandalas. One more attraction of this place is a sacred shrine that is devoted to the guardian deities. A popular festival, named as the Matho Nagrang festival is organized annually in this Gompa, in the month of March for fifteen days. Main feature of this annual festival is that the Buddhist monks perform holy dances, as well as a number of traditional rituals.  It is an ideal place for understanding Buddhist teachings and ideologies. Tourists can access this place easily by car or taxi. Stanka Gompa is the nearest attraction to this monastery.
