Likir Monastery

Location: Likir Monastery is located at a distance of 52 kilometers towards west of Leh. This beautiful monastery is situated on a small hill and is at a distance of 10 kilometers from Saspol village, close to the river Indus.

Description: This monastery is supposed to be one of the most properly maintained monasteries in Ladakh region. Lama Duwang Chosje, in the year 1065, founded this monastery under the administration of Lanchen Gyalpo, the king of Ladakh. A gold statue of 23 m height of Maitreya Buddha is housed in this monastery. There are two assembly halls in this monastery. Statues of Tsong Khapa, Sakyamuni Maitreya, Amitabha and Bodhisatva are housed in these two halls. This monastery serves as a home for around 120 Buddhist monks. A large number of ancient manuscripts, along with a collection comprising of earthen pots, old costumes, and thangkas can be seen in this monastery. An event of Dosmochey is organized annually in this monastery on the 27th and 29th day of the Tibetan calendar.

Activities: This is an old Gompa and contains rich heritage of Buddhist religion, culture as well as tradition. Devotees visit this serene and calm Gompa to attain mental bliss and peace.
