Location: Hemis Monastery is positioned in Hemis town. The town is situated 45 kilometers towards southeast of Leh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Description: Hemis monastery was constructed in the 11th century and it is the biggest monastery that exists in the Ladakh region. Hemis monastery is owned by the people who belong to Drokpa community. According to the historians, the monastery remained neglected for a long time, but the re-structuring of this monastery in the year 1672 brought it to limelight again. The man behind the reconstruction was Sengge Namgyal, who is accredited for giving a new life to this ancient structure. It is a prominent place for Buddhist sect, because it holds the annual festival, called the Hemis festival. The festival is held to honor Padmasambhava who is considered as a significant person in the Buddhist religion. This structure of this monastery depicts great artistic abilities of the people of that time.
