Stok Palace, Leh

Location: Once an abode of Namgyal Kings, Stok Palace has now become a well-known tourist attraction in Leh town. You can easily visit this royal palace, located just 14 km away from Leh.

Description: Built by King Sengge Namgyal in 17th century, Stok Palace is an astonishing construction of bygone era. The nine storey structure is one of the oldest Namgyal dynasty castles made in ancient style. The upper floors that used to accommodate the royal Kings and lowers floors held stables, seem to be telling the legends of olden times. Though the structure was demolished by the Dogra forces, this place still reflects the essence of old Tibetan culture and traditions. Restorations done have again returned the glory to this place and common public is allowed to explore the beauty of this royal palace which may take around 4 to 5 hours. For history buffs, the palace has a lot more on display. The incredible collection of jewelry, ornaments, ceremonial attires and crowns will surely amaze you with their appearance. There are many places famous for beautiful views of sunrise, but experiencing sunset and sunrise from this place has its own charm.

Activities: The palace is also a good place to observe the snow-clad Zanskar range, along the cascades of Indus River.
