Description: The presence of a large number of monkeys, playing around the Durga Temple has earned it the name of Monkey Temple. Believed to be built 500 years ago by a Bengali Maharani, Durga temple is devoted to Goddess Durga. It is constructed in North Indian style by the combination of a large number of shikharas. Painted in red color with ochre, the temple correlates with Goddess Durga, the symbol of power and strength. It is believed that the statue of Goddess Durga, which is present in the temple, appeared on its own and it is not manmade. Some devotees can be seen walking around the temple because of religious significance of doing this. Durga temple constitutes a pond of water, known as Durga Kund, having four pillars, one at every corner. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit this temple during navratras and other religious occasions.
