Location: Earliest brewery of Asia, Solan Brewery is a large group of companies situated in Solan, India.
Description: Amidst the Himalayan Mountains, Solan Brewery was set up by a British, Edward Dyer in the late 1820’s. Lion, the first beer of India, was launched by this first brewery of Asia. The brewery was first set up in Kasauli and later on shifted to Solan, as it was closer to the historic British summer retreat, Shimla. Dyer Meakin Breweries has now been converted into a distillery, renowned among people as Mohan Meakin Ltd. After 1949, in Independent India, N.N. Mohan took the management of the company and changed the name to Mohan Meakin Breweries in 1967. Later on, his elder son Colonel V.R. Mohan took over as Managing Director of the company. Another interesting fact is that Lion is still sold in Northern India with the same name as before. This leading brewery has launched many products in India, including Diplomat Deluxe, Black Knight, Colonel’s Special, Meakin 10,000, Solan No 1 and Summer Hall whiskies, London Dry and many more.
Activities: The huge expanse of the brewery offers a bird’s eye view of magnificent Himalayan peaks covered by greenery of dense forests.
