Kali Temple, West Bengal

Kali Temple

Kali temple is situated on the shores of the Hooghly River. The idol of Devi kept here is fierce and she looks unforgiving besides being tactless for the wayward. Entering the shrine with the idea of witnessing the common image of deity leads to a shock because the shrine is all about the head and tongue of Kali the goddess.  There is a little story behind the construction of this shrine. It is said that the goddess approached and ordered for the construction of the idol to an artist in his dreams; that was supposed to be completed in one night. The artist was able to complete only some part of the idol and that portion is placed in the temple. The temple building is about 200 years old and it remains open for the common masses from 5 am to 10 am and 2pm to 11:30 pm.
