One of the earliest attractions located in the city of Darjeeling, Observatory hill is also called as Makal-Babu-ko-Thaan. Situated near the Mall, this hill offers a beautiful view of snow covered ranges, which include the Kanchenjunga mount.
Popular among visitors because of the presence of various Buddhist and Hindu temples, this attraction is visited by a large number of people all around the year. The well known Bhutia Busty Monastery was built on this hill by Lama Dorje Rinzing in the year 1765. It is believed that Darjeeling got its name from the monks of this monastery who used to call the region as Dorje-ling.
An ancient temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, is also present on the hilltop and is known as Mahakal Temple. Devotees in large numbers throng this temple to offer their prayers and to seek lord’s blessings. Apart from these places, children can also enjoy horse riding at this hill.
