Buddhist Excavations

Location: Various places which are located in Visakhapatnam are included in Buddhist Excavations. However, some of the most important tourist destinations are Bhavi Konda, Bojjana Konda, Salihundam and Thotla Konda.

Description: These were small villages of Buddhist era, which were present during the 2nd century. During the activities of excavation, which were carried out during 1906, various Buddhist monuments, which included chaitya and stupas, were found. It is also believed that corporal remains of Buddha were preserved at one of these sacred places. Tourists visiting any of these Buddhist excavations can view the architectural remains belonging to Buddhist period which dates back to 200 BC to 700 AD. Different rock cut temples are also included in the Buddhist excavations. The influence of Buddhism is clearly seen on the lives of people residing in the city of Visakhapatnam.

Activities: Apart from visiting different monuments and stupas, tourists can also visit various temples dedicated to different Hindu deities. Some of the temples which are present in the region are believed to possess magical powers and thus are thronged by a large number of tourists and local residents alike. Vacationers can also indulge in tasting the delicious and lip smacking food full of local flavors.
