Location: Astonishingly set on the top of Zabarwan Mountain, Shankaracharya Temple is one of the most ancient shrines of Srinagar.

Description: Dating back to 200 BC,Shankaracharya Temple is dedicated to Hindu deity Lord Shiva. It is believed that once Adi Shankara visited this shrine and since then people started calling the shrine by its present name. The shrine is not only a sacred place for Hindus but Buddhists as well. Shiva Lingam in this shrine is installed by Adi Shankara on his visit to Kashmir. Elevated at 100 ft, the magnificent shrine offers awe-inspiring views of Kashmir valley, as well as the snow clad peaks of Pir Panjal Range. The sanctum of the shrine houses a great treasure of historical Persian inscriptions. The chamber is small and circular in design. Along with this, you may observe the ceiling of the temple adorned by four octagonal columns which reflect the early style of architecture. You have to step up the stairs enclosed by two walls, so you can see the remarkable Lingam encircled by a snake in this shrine. Taxis and buses are easily available, so you may reach this temple hassle-free.

Activities: You must visit Rozabal Shrine, one of the prominent places of tourist interest, located very near to this shrine.
