Tumbhuru Teertham

Location: One of the most popular religious destinations, Tumbhuru Teertham is a scared place in Tirupati. Travel 12 km from Tirupati and arrive at this sacred place.

Description: All Teerthams in Tirumala are somewhat linked with Hindu scriptures. In the same way, Tumbhuru Teertham also has a remarkable legend behind it. The legend is in relation to a Gandharva, Tumbhuru. Once he advised his wife to bathe during winters. But she was afraid of cold, so she refused to accompany him. For the reason that his wife was very lazy, he cursed her. Due to this curse, the lady was transformed into a toad and had to survive in a pond. One day, a sage Augusthya came here with his disciples and described to them the divinity of this pond. While he was telling this, the toad regained her original form as Gandharva. The pond is now renowned as Tumbhuru Teertham and frequently visited by devotees every year. Alike other Teerthams, people visit this place to enjoy a dip in the holy water of this pond. It is believed that one can get relieved from all Doshas by just taking a bath here.

Activities: Auspicious time to take a holy bath in this pond is on the day of Pournami, which comes during Phalguna Masa on the bright constellation of Uttar Phalguni.
