Chandigarh is a well planned city, which is located in the foothills of the Himalayas, called the Shivaliks. The city is surrounded by over 3000 hectares of forest region and hilly terrain, which surround the numerous water bodies, including Sukhna Lake and Patiala ki Rao. For tourists who wish to see these forests for themselves, they can visit the Kansal forest, which is located near the Kansal village on the outskirts of Chandigarh. Entry to this reserve forest is restricted therefore tourists must obtain permission from the relevant authorities beforehand. Another forest which is located a little further away is Nepli Forest which is slightly wilder than Kansal. Both these forests have their respective guest houses, wherein tourists can relax thanks to the flower beds, manicured lawns and water bodies nearby. There are a number of treks organized to and through these forests as well, which tourists can opt to go for.
