Jewish Synagogue

Location: One of the oldest existing synagogue, Jewish Synagogue is definitely a must visit place. Jewish Synagogue is sited at one corner of the Jew Street of the Jew Town commune of Mattancherry in Kochi Fort. Being situated in Mattancherry in the heart of Kochi, the synagogue is easily within reach.

Description: This magnificent construction was built in 1568, when the Jews came to Mattancherry, after their eviction from Rahabi. This Synagouge was built along with a clock tower and the floor was paved with hand painted paddle pattern tiles of China. The Jewish Synagogue of Kochi is rich enough for tempting tourists. Its most significant remnants are the imposing copper plates that have keepsakes of the accolades bestowed upon the Kochi King. These mementos also include marvelously engraved silver and golden coronets. The synagogue is ornately adorned with crystal chandeliers and engraved wood, which is perfectly blended with ceramic tile work in blue and white color.

Activities: The Jewish Synagogue in Kochi is undoubtedly one of the excellent tourist spots in Kerala. For the public, the visiting hours to the synagogue are from 10 am to 12 noon and after a lunch break it again opens from 3 pm to 5 pm every day; however it remains closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
