Description: One of the most fascinating monuments of Pondicherry, The Statue of Dupleix is a significant evidence of the French colonial past of Pondicherry. Governor General, Joseph-François Marquis Dupleix was the one who initiated the French establishment in India in 1742 and governed till 1754. This statue was constructed in the memory of Dupleix. About 2.88 m tall statue of Dupleix is beautifully carved from granite and is a famous attraction among tourists. The intricately carved granite columns adorning this statue present an amazing example of fascinating French architecture style. Although, Dupleix left India in 1754 but his contribution came into existence in year 1870. Being located at the end of famous promenade road, this statue is easily visible even from a distance. The breathtaking view of Bay of Bengal offers a perfect backdrop to this wonderful statue.
