Edakkal cave is 25 kms from Kalpetta and 3 km from Ambalavayal. This cave is a crevice 96 ft in length and 22 ft in width, formed by a fissure created due to natural weathering. The depth of the fissure is nearly 30 feet, giving it the appearance of a cave to any observer.
The pre-historic times have been etched in the rocks in the form of human and animal figure carvings. The caves can be approached by a kilometer trek, starting from Edakkal. Morning is the best time to visit, though the caves are open till 5 pm. The roads are in good condition. An uphill trek of 45 minutes leads to the actual cave.
