An architectural masterpiece, the Napier museum was completed in the year 1880 and designed by Robert Chisholm. It was established in the year 1855 under the name of Lord Napier, who was the governor of (then) Madras (now Chennai) from 1866 - 1872.
Designed in awe-inspiring gothic style architecture with minarets, this building boasts of a natural air conditioning with the help of its Indo-Gothic structure.
This 150-year-old museum houses rare collections of bronze idols, ancient ornaments, temple chariots and beautiful ivory carvings. The museum grounds contain 55 acres of the oldest Zoological gardens of India, established in 1857.
