Gateway of India

Location: An architectural wonder, Gateway of India overlooks the Arabian Sea and is situated in the south Mumbai. This monument is regarded as a prominent historical landmark of the city.

Description: This historical monument was constructed under the British raj. This structure, which measures 85 ft in height, was used by the British governors as their landing place. It is believed that this was the only monument that could be seen by the visitors arriving in the city via the sea route. Basically the gateway of India was built to honor the landing of King George V and Queen Mary during the year 1911 and its construction was completed in the year 1924. Upon visiting this place, a person can get a glimpse of Indo-Saracenic architectural style. This gateway has been built with the help of concrete and yellow basalt. Last British troop passed through this monument in a ceremony that was conducted in February 1948, marking the end of their rule over India.

Activities: Gateway of India is regarded as one of the most important attractions that are present in the city. After visiting this beautifully constructed masterpiece, tourists can also visit the statue of Shivaji Maharaj located nearby. In the year 1961, this statue was opened for the public.
