The train rides uphill connecting Ooty to Mettupalayam, which is a low lying small town, located on the foothills of Nilgiris. The train began its journey back in the year of 1889 and has never looked back since then. The train runs at a speed of 33 Kms per hour and covers a distance of about 46 Kms starting from the place called Udhagamandalam and undertakes four and a half hours to reach the region of Ooty.
While travelling on the Toy train you can have a look at the 7 Kms long stretch of fields of rice, which later on changes into a rocky and rugged formation spanning over an area of 27 Kms. The route ahead comprises of 13 tunnels and 26 viaducts. The train halts at Coonoor after a steep climb and finally stops at the destination located 2128 meters above sea level. The return journey commences at 3.00 p.m. in the afternoon and the train reaches back to Mettupalayam at around 6.35 p.m. in the evening. The best months to enjoy the ride on this train are during the months of April to May, during which an additional toy train is added to the route to cater the needs of a large number of visitors.
