The directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom was established in 1957, as a traditional art and craft learning center of the state. Situated 500 meters away from the main market of Gangtok, it preserves the languishing artefacts and skills of artificers of Sikkim.
Its aim is not only to showcase the traditional handloom and handicrafts but also to encourage and publicize information, with regards to the government of the state, for establishing incomparable gradation programmes and development centers for art and craft in Sikkim. In order to encourage maximum participation of individuals, the artisans and locals are trained with the purpose of developing eco - friendly working style and acquiring skills that will help them attain self reliance and satisfaction in the long run.
The center has a great collection of hand-carved folding benches and tables, superbly crafted blankets, bed sheets, traditionally themed carpets, handmade shawls and masques, wooden dolls, footwear, silk cloths, lamp stands and many such wonderful creations under one roof.
