At a distance of 12 km from the border crossing at Mollem and almost 65 km from the capital of the state of Goa lies a place known as Tambi Surla, which is home to what is popularly known as the oldest temple in all of Goa. The construction of this temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, is supposed to have begun in the early 12th Century AD. Even though there are numerous debates regarding how, when and by whom the construction of this temple was ordered, one thing which is agreed upon universally is its beauty. With black basalt based construction, this temple is similar to those located on the other side of the Goa - Karnataka state border in Aihole. Getting to this temple can be a challenge since the closest town is Valpoi in the Sattari district, which is accessible only after a 22 km journey into the forested area.
