The Capela da Nossa Senhora do Monte or the Chapel of Our Lady of Monte, as it is also known, is one of the most prominent churches in the state of Goa and was built in the year 1557, with a long flight of stairs leading to the church. Tourists who want to learn more about the history of Goa will be surprised to learn that the site of this church is the same hill wherein Alfonso De Albuquerque and the other Portuguese Settlers were engaged in combat with the artillery units and troops of Adil Shah in May 1510. The location of this chapel was not only of strategic importance, but as tourists who visit this church are sure to find out and will also be pleased to see are the picturesque views it grants them. This church has an attached residence for the caretakers as well as three altars where locals and visitors come to worship.
