Under the strict vigil of the Forest Department of the state of Goa, the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of over 200 sq km in the Sattari district of North Goa. This sanctuary is located near the town Valpoi and is extremely important, since it is also a reserve forest under the aegis of the nationwide “Project Tiger”, which aims at the conservation, rehabilitation and then repopulation of the Bengal Tiger population which lives here. Tourists who want to visit this place must first obtain the necessary permissions and clearances, but the awe inspiring natural beauty of the flora and fauna in Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary makes the extra effort more than worth it. There are not a lot of tourist facilities in the sanctuary apart from the guest houses run by the Forest Department; therefore day time visits are recommended.
