Shri Mangueshi Temple, Goa

Shri Mangueshi Temple

History of Goa has seen many unfortunate events, like devastation and destruction of religious places. Sri Mangueshi temple situated in Priol narrates a similar story, as the temple was originally located at Kushasthali in Cortalim. Due to the fear of an attack by the Portuguese, this temple was shifted to Pirolim which was ruled by the king of Bijapur, Adil Shah.

Temple was repaired a number of times after the shifting was done. External structure of the temple presents an influence of Hindu, Portuguese as well as Mughal architecture. The temple has a shrine of lord Manguesh and a common belief is that lord Manguesh was an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Devotees of lord Shiva visit this temple to worship the lord and ask for forgiveness and blessings from the God. One thing that needs to be noted is that foreigners are not allowed to enter the temple premises and the reason given is their dressing style, which is considered objectionable and their behavior is not approved by Hindu culture.
