Situated on the Chorao islands is Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, which is spread over an area of around 1.8 sq kilometers. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is named after Dr. Salim Ali, a world renowned ornithologist. This park is situated on an attractive island which is full of churches and villas and the churches are whitewashed which adds to their beauty.
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is covered with lush greenery which includes mangrove vegetation and it is surrounded by a network of mini river streams and tributaries which help to maintain its greenery. This sanctuary serves as a home to different species of birds, such as parrots, egrets, kingfishers, kites, eagles, herons, cormorants and so on. The winter season witnesses visits by pintails and coots as well. A variety of animals also dwell in this place, for example otters, jackals and crocodiles.
