Located in the suburbs of the city of Panaji, Dona Paula Beach is situated adjacent to the town of Oddavell, which has been renamed as Dona Paula. This city is also the location of the Goa University, the National Institute of Oceanography and the International Centre of Goa, as well as a number of hotels ranging from economical budget hotels to extravagant luxury hotels. Tourists who want to know more about Goa and its culture will be pleased to learn about the history of Dona Paula which was actually named after one of Portuguese India’s most prominent figures, the daughter of the Viceroy of Portugal in modern day Jaffnapatnam in Sri Lanka, Paula Amaral Antonio de Souto Maior. Her extensive charity work was said to have greatly benefitted all the people of the village of Oddavell and they changed the name of the village (now town) to Dona Paula as a commemoration to her.
