SANCHI- City of Enchanting Monuments

A quaint hamlet, Sanchi, which is located in Madhya Pradesh, is famous for housing a large number of Buddhist stupas and monuments. Built across 3rd century BC to 12th century AD, various holy shrines, stupas, pillars and monasteries are present in this city. Beautifully carved monuments reflect the culture and legendary beliefs of this place.

History of Sanchi is believed to revolve around these monuments but according to people’s belief, Lord Buddha has never visited Sanchi during his lifetime. Also known as Vidishagiri, this city was considered to be a trading hub of rich merchants. These merchants largely contributed in making Sanchi a center of Buddhist culture.

This city is also known for a true love story of a girl named Devi, who was a pious follower of Buddhism. King Asoka fell for this girl and it was on her insistence that the king constructed such wonderful monuments which were dedicated to Buddha. It was in the year 1818 that this city was rediscovered.

Some of the eye catching and attractive Buddhist monuments of the country adorn this city. Attractions which are present in Sanchi are Buddhist Vihara, The Great Bowl, Sanchi Museum, Ashoka Pillar and Sanchi Stupa’s Four Gateways. These wonders contribute to a new phase in the field of architecture of temples.

Apart from historical and religious aspects, this city is also famous for its enchanting beauty. Travelers can visit this place to feel the attractiveness of the region as the picturesque beauty of the place beholds a person’s attention.
