Palakkad – Enter the nature’s retreat
Located in the Palghat Gap, in the state of Kerala, is the small town Palakkad. It is located around 350 Kms away from north of Thiruvananthapuram, thus connecting Kerala to Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Palghat, which got its origin from the famous Western Ghats, the Palghat Gap. However, its actual name Palakkad came from the word Palai nilam, which means a dry land, but many believe that it got its origin from the fusion of two words of different languages, Tamil and Malayalam.
During your excursion within the town you can witness several small villages in its surroundings and experience the local language Malayalam, which is the only mode of communication amongst locals here. For tourists who wish to have a relief from the busy city life, Palakkad offers an exemplary Brahmin life with utter silence and lush greenery all around.
On the other hand, you can visit the famous Palakkad fort, Pothundy Dam, Malampuzha Dam, Walayar, Punnakudi Mahavishnu Temple, Waterfalls, Atapaddy and various other prominent places that add charm to its beauty. For visitors the local markets have abundance of items to offer. You can shop around for tribal handicrafts, clothes, accessories. Even the beautiful jewelry and the famous Travancore saris are worth buying.
The town observes celebration of many local festivals, like the Pudduseri Vedi, Tharakad Sivan Koil Siva Rathry and the Padur Vela. You can enjoy watching the glittering temples and even participate in the small fest organized by the locals. Every year a huge influx of tourists can be witnessed who come here to relax and revitalize in its colorful culture.
