Bishnupur

The town of Bishnupur is located at a distance of about 132 Km from the city of Kolkata. Bishnupur is known across the nation for its Terracotta temples and the famous and elegant Baluchari Sarees. This small town is a part of the district of Bankura in the State of West Bengal. The town has got almost all the Famous and mighty Terracotta temples constructed by the Malla Kings who ruled during the 17th and 18th century. These temples contribute to the glorious history of this town.

 

 

The history of the town of Bishnupur goes way back to the 694 AD, when Malla Dynasty was set up by the famous King Raghunath. The place got named Bishnupur in 994 AD and it has been taken from the name of a Divine Hindu God named “Vishnu”.

 

 

The region of Bishnupur is a sacred spot and flaunts many intricate Terracotta temples. These temples exhibit a lot of Terracotta work and they were constructed under the Kingship of The Malla Kings. Some of the renowned and most visited temples include Jorbangla Temple, Nandalal Temple, Radhamadhab Remple, Dalmadal Caman, Madanmohan Temple, Nandalal Temple, Radhamadhab Temple and Shyamrai Temple. Besides these terracotta temples, the region is also known for its Baluchari Sarees, especially made from Tussar silk.

 

 

A yearly fair is conducted here and it goes on for four days. This fair is held in the month of December every year near the Temple of Madanmohan. Similarly, a snake festival is held every year in the month of August and is well known amongst the visitors and the local folks. Other festivals celebrated here with great joy include Durga Puja, Kali Puja or Diwali.
