An industrial city of Haryana, it has been named after its founder, Shaikh Farid, the treasurer of Emperor Jahangir, in 1607 A.D. It was built in order to protect the highway passing through the town. As a town it housed a fort, a tank and a mosque, which unfortunately are ruins today. As of 15th August 1979, Faridabad became the official 12th district of the State of Haryana.

It accounts for Haryana's largest percentage of revenue generated through the 15,000 small, medium and large industries it houses, and ranks 9th in the category of Asia's largest Industrial estate, generating a turnover of Rs 1500 billion. Faridabad is also said to have one of the finest R&D facilities in Asia.

Local trains connect Faridabad to Delhi and surrounding areas.

Haryana Roadways has a fleet of buses connecting the city to the neighboring cities.

Metered auto rickshaws, taxis, tongas, private and state-run buses are available for local transport.

Faridabad city is believed to have derived its name from an eminent Sufi saint – Baba Farid. His tomb is situated in the city which is a popular pilgrimage for local Muslims. Some people believe that Baba Farid was the founder of Faridabad.

It is a magnificent picnic spot, situated in the district of Faridabad. The town is only 21 kms from Delhi. The historic reservoir of Surajkund was built in 10th century by the king Surajpal of Rajput Tomar dynasty. Nearby, you can see the artificial lake which is built exclusively for the purpose of boating. The Rajhans Complex at Surajkund offers rock climbing. In the first week of February, a famous craft mela is held here; artisans from all over India come here to sell their creations.

The picturesque lake of Badkhal is situated in Badkhal village just 32 km from Delhi. The main attractions here are the large water bodies encompassed by Aravalli Hills. Winter season brings migratory birds from far west. Bird watching and boating are common among visitors. Facilities like Motel Wings, Restaurant, Bar, Conference hall, Minivet huts, Boating, Filling station, Bath complex (with swimming pool, sauna, steam bath, massage) and kiosks with snacks are available here. It takes hardly 30 minutes from the national capital – Delhi to reach the spot.

This is a widely visited park in Faridabad district. The lush green lawns and a variety of trees are the main attraction of the park.

Golf tourism is gaining popularity in Haryana. Aravali golf course is one such golf course near Faridabad which has significantly promoted Golf among the masses of Haryana. The course has a club house which has facilities of bar and restaurant. Further expansion plan of the Club includes putting up a motel with 6 rooms, a lounge and a card room. The course with its club house spreads over 67 acres and has a 9-hole facility, tees and greens.
