Located in the town of Sadras, the Dutch Fort is 400 years old. Located at a distance of 70 km from Chennai, this fort encloses the remains of weaver’s work area, a granary and their settlement after the weaver’s settlement was taken over by the Dutch East India Company in 1612.
Many items were unearthed by the Archaeological Survey of India from the premises of the fort which were later on identified. Amongst the various things, remnants of different things that were used by the Dutch were found. People who have interest in knowing more about the history of a place should visit the Dutch Fort as it tells a lot about the lifestyle of Dutch people and also about their traditions and culture.
Being located on the port, trade flourished at this place and muslin cloth was regarded as the main product of the area. The weaver’s town was destroyed by the Dutch much before the invasion of the British army.
