Founded in the year of 1974, the New Mangalore Port lies in the region of Panambur near Mangalore city and is famous by the title of New Mangalore Port Trust, abbreviated as NMPT. It is the only major port in the state of Karnataka and ranks ninth all over India. It took nearly twelve long years to give this port its final shape and structure.
It lies in the north to the converging point of Arabian Sea and River Gurupura and the port shares its boundaries with the state of Kerala. Materials exported via this port include Iron Ore concentrates and pellets, Coffee, Manganese, Iron Ore Fines, Cargo containers and Granite Stones. LPG, Crude and petroleum products constitute the major imports, including phosphoric acid, timber logs, wood pulp, finished fertilizers, liquid ammonia and other liquid chemicals, etc.
