Located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is also referred to as Thattekad. It is a paradise for passionate bird watchers and is home to many animals and reptiles.
The sanctuary is best visited with the migratory birds arriving from the north in the months from November to June. Some of the rare species of birds spotted here are the Malabar Gray Hornbill, crested serpent eagle, crimson throated barber, peninsular bay owl, rose billed roller, fairy bluebird and the great Indian Hornbill.
Vehicles are not permitted here and exploring with a guide is the best option. The animal rehab center and the Taxidermic Museum are great attractions, open to visitors from 8 am to 6 pm.
