Jata Shankar caves are one of the important places in the Saivite tradition. A must visit place of Pachmarhi; it houses a natural Shivalingam, which stands high in the shadow of a massive rock. It is the cave which has everything related to Lord Shiva, in fact the stone formation here gives an impression of the hundred headed snake, known as Seshnag.
As per Hindu mythology, it is the same place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from Bhasmasur. From the wobbly rocks of this cave originates the Jambu Dwip stream. It got its name as Jata Shankar, because the loose rocks of this cave have close resemblance to the disheveled hair of Lord Shiva.
It attracts large number of devotees and tourist from all over the world. You will get astonished to see the gargantuan rock, hanging terrifyingly between the unsteady walls of the cave.
