Situated amidst the Chandaka forest, literal meaning of Nandankanan is “Garden of Gods”. Spread over an area of 400 hectares, this zoo was established in the year 1960 and was opened for public only after 1979. Nandankanan zoo houses some of the rare animal species that are on the verge of extinction. A botanical garden is also present in the zoo which is located on the shores of Lake Kanjia.
Animals that can be easily seen here are white tigers, crocodilians, Sangal lion, tailed macaque, mouse deer and a number of birds and fishes. This place is a well recognized wildlife sanctuary and travelers can enjoy tiger safari, aerial ropeway as well as boating and elephant rides. Different types of awareness programs are also held in the library that is present inside the zoo.
Amongst the well maintained gardens and beautiful lawns, a person can enjoy the whole day with his family or friends.
