Location: Thiksey monastery is situated at an altitude of 11,800 ft in the Indus valley at a distance of about 18 km from the town of Leh. It is a well known Buddhist monastery which is located on a hill’s top and is managed by yellow hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
Description: This monastery is a 12 storied complex, which houses different items that are related to Buddhist art. 10 temples, residence of 120 monks, nunnery and an assembly hall are located within this monastery. A 40 feet high statue of future Buddha is installed to honor 14th Dalai Lama’s visit. The interiors of assembly hall have paintings of Tibetan calendar, along with the wheel of life - Bhavachakra. The meaning of these paintings is to remind a person that he is required to overcome earthy ties, in order to achieve enlightenment.
Activities: Along with paying obeisance at the shrine, tourists can also become a part of various festive celebrations that are held here annually. People can enjoy local dance form, such as Cham or mask dance. Shopaholics can indulge in shopping of different items from the trade fairs that are held regularly at the monastery’s base. Chanting of synchronized Buddhist sutras increases the holiness in the ambiance.
